Once, we had interop, and with it, all the choice and empowerment that comes from being able to tell a tech company to go fuck itself if it mistreats you.

Today, interop only exists to the extent that the dominant companies deign to permit it.

Tomorrow? Tomorrow, we might get interop, and with it, a precious prize: technological self-determination, which is the right not just to choose what your technology does, but whom it does it for and whom it does it to.

For this chapter, I’d like you to suspend your disbelief for a moment and consider what we’re fighting for. (Don’t worry, in the next chapter I’ll tell you how we get it.)
